Our book design charts one of the most extensive private collections of antique Greek coins. It details the ancient motifs and provenance of these artefacts and presents the passion and curiosity of their collector.
The book announces its subject matter with a whole-coin blind emboss on the cover and with endpapers that use close-up photography to reveal rich textures and forms. Its title is added with a silver emboss, and typography and graphics are printed with a silver ink throughout to further echo the collection.
It is divided into chapters by different geographical regions, with each introduced with a large map showing the locations in which the featured coins originate. Each of these coins is then allowed space on a spread for large-scale photography of its obverse and reverse faces, along with a 1:1 scale graphic. Information referencing its age, original value, weight, references within literature and proof of pedigree are included above, along with descriptions of the stories, symbols and characters depicted in its design. An appendix at the rear of the book provides a glossary of all terms and abbreviations used.
The typeface used throughout is Sainte Colombe, a contemporary serif with a nod to classicism. This captures the spirit of the collector, who aims to bind together the past and present in their collection and publication.
