Birds
Birds: Black Birds, White Birds is a new book by renowned photographer and alpinist Robert Bösch. It deepens his exploration of the abstract and experimental and furthers our creative relationship, having previously worked together on the books Moving Mountains, Engiadina and Not Seen.

“Birds are an ideal motif for abstract, graphic images…they stand out against a wide sky and smooth water surfaces.” The book design takes its cue from the rhythmic, darting forms, captured in stark black and white by Bösch. We alternate between screenprinting white ink onto black paperstock and vice-versa, a process in tune with the painting-like quality of the works. The serif forms of the typeface Bradford echo birds’ anatomy while our paragraph arrangements hint at their flight. A clear slipcase highlights the book’s content with flashes of black and white and emphasises it as an art object in its own right, created in a limited edition of 50. It also establishes a clear link with sister publication Not Seen, itself presented within a special acrylic slipcase.
