Chapel Market
Chapel Market is a traditional street market, set in the heart of Angel for 150 years. We brought a new placemaking scheme to life in this historic space as part of a collaborative, community-centred team (with architects Carver Haggard, Islington Council and key resident, trader and local business stakeholders).

The graphic design embraces existing materials and methods used by the market's traders. New signs echo stall frames, both in their steel box tube construction and in how their lengths, bends and joints inform the choice of new house typeface 1903 (itself inspired by the local area) for all titling, numbering and maps.
Large-scale floor patterns play further with these forms to help zone the market, a wayfinding approach supported by on-site maps, each of which employs a colour palette drawn from the bold tarps of this vibrant pop-up streetscape.

“Great placemaking and market branding via creative tactical urbanism (light, cheap & fast) in Chapel Market, Islington.”
Mark Atkinson—Place-based Social and Economic Development Practitioner
“Excellent use of markings... a shared space concept but more practical application. I wish more architects and planners would consider using these concepts to modify road behaviour.”
Glenn Shelby Smith—Development Manager, Kestrel Thermoplastics
